Victor Frankenstein review: A Gothic horror show
In her 1818 novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley paints a vivid portrait of a wretched monster, whose "unearthly ugliness rendered it almost too horrible for human eyes". Scottish director Paul McGuigan's clunky reworking of the Gothic masterpiece, from the perspective of Frankenstein's assistant Igor, is also a lifeless and unappealing mess.
Disfigured, snivelling Igor doesn't feature in Shelley's haunting text, but was popularised by Hollywood in the Thirties and Forties.
Daniel Radcliffe's Igor is a kind-hearted circus clown. He isn't a hunchback at all, but a victim of a nasty bulging abscess which is drained of pus in stomach-churning close-up as a centrepiece of the film's pedestrian first half.
The bond between master and much-abused whelp is one of the more interesting aspects of Max Landis' misguided and misfiring script.

Loveless sex is such a turn-on

We have nothing in common and my friends call him Lurch, but I can’t give him up.
He’s as thick as a brick, but when we have sex I’m transported to heaven.
This man is outrageously blessed in the trouser department and can do things between the sheets that set me on fire.
The other night he came round to my place and I opened the door stark naked.
I literally pulled him in by the tie and yanked down his zipper.
He didn’t have time to draw breath as I threw him on the floor and launched myself on top of him.
The sex was loveless and hard but so satisfying.
Eventually we made it into the bedroom where we had more hot sex before he begged me to let him sleep because he was exhausted.
I accept that I’m being shallow for hanging on to him and I admit that I’m a user.
Occasionally he’ll insist that we go out on a proper date and I have to grit my teeth and pretend I’m interested in his boring job and tedious colleagues.
I worry that he’s getting serious about me.
I cringe when he tells me he has “feelings” and that I’m lovely, because I’m really not.
A couple of times he’s talked about getting engaged and I’ve nearly gagged.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla set to miss four months of action as injury is worse than first feared

Santi Cazorla’s knee injury is even worse than first feared and the Spanish midfielder is reportedly set for a four-month spell on the sidelines as Arsenal’s injury problems mount.

The ex-Villarreal man is the latest Arsenal star to be ruled out of contention in recent weeks and Wenger’s side now have ten first-team stars on the sidelines.
Nuclear power as panacea for climate change? Experts divided

As delegates at a Paris summit haggle over how to curb global warming, the role of nuclear energy in limiting climate-changing emissions is the subject of fierce debate between champions and critics of atomic power.
Energy production accounts for 35 percent of the greenhouse-gas emissions that fuel global warming, with 25 percent coming from electricity generation alone.
Unlike polluting coal, oil and gas-fired power plants, nuclear facilities do not generate emissions by producing electricity.
Like solar panels or wind turbines, they only indirectly generate emissions during their life cycle, namely in the construction of reactors and the extraction of the uranium they use as fuel.
Samsung agrees to pay Apple $548M in damages with conditions

Samsung Electronics has agreed to pay Apple US$548 million in damages in a patent infringement lawsuit in California, which will be the first shot at compensation Apple will get in the dispute that has dragged on for several years with many twists and turns.
The move by Samsung follows the rejection last month by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit of a full-bench hearing to review the damages award in the patent dispute in the light of new information about an Apple patent.
The South Korean company has confirmed to Apple that it will pay the iPhone maker the damages within 10 days of the delivery of Apple’s invoice to Samsung, according to a joint case management statement filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose division on Thursday.
But Samsung has also reserved the right to collect reimbursement if there are any further developments in the case, including results of proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that address the patents at issue. Apple has disputed Samsung's asserted rights to reimbursement.
Gold continues to fall - so why do these investors still own so much of it?

Gold investors have racked up huge losses over the past couple of years.
In August 2011, at the height of the European debt crisis, the gold price was about $1,900. It has now slumped to about $1,050.
Several reasons have been put forward to explain the decline. While there were some sound reasons for the preceding bull market, including fears over paper currencies such as the euro, speculative investors were also sucked in. They will now have sold, depressing the price.
Concerns that “quantitative easing” (QE) would spark hyperinflation have also proved misplaced, reducing the attraction of gold, which is often seen as the ultimate inflation-proof asset.
But some cautious fund managers refuse to sell all their gold. They explain why below.
Mr Stewart said financial markets had been driven higher by QE rather than by any improvement in companies’ profits.
He said he viewed gold as a currency, the only one that could not be manipulated by central banks.
“Currencies across the world are being debased, so I am holding gold as an insurance policy,” Mr Stewart said.
PM says Turkey cannot be ‘brought to its knees’ by Russia
Turkey — Turkey’s prime minister says his country can’t be “brought to its knees” by Russian economic sanctions imposed in response to Turkey’s downing of a Russian warplane.
Ahmet Davutoglu speaking in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday again defended Turkey’s action and said Ankara would not apologize for “defending its borders.”
Davutoglu again insisted Turkey did not know the nationality of the plane when it brought it down inside Turkish air space. Davutoglu suggested for the first time, however, that the plane was brought down because Turkey could not “morally” allow the plane to trespass on Turkish territory before bombing Turkmen areas in Syria

Islamic State agents from Syria 'in Thailand to target Russians'

Thai police say they were warned by Moscow that 10 Syrians working for the so-called Islamic State (IS) entered Thailand in October to target Russians.
A leaked Thai police memo says the information was passed by Russia's intelligence agency. More than 1.5 million Russians visited in 2013.
But Thai police say they have not been able to confirm the presence of these Syrians and officials called for calm.
Russia began air strikes against IS in Syria at the end of September.
An IS-linked group also claimed it brought down the Russian airliner which crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula in October, killing all 224 people on board.
'Everything is safe'
The leaked memo, marked "urgent" and dated 27 November, was from a commander of Thailand's Special Branch and was sent to police units.
ISIS planning to target UK 'in weeks': Spy agencies intercept plot of Paris-style attack

The terrifying message came as a terrorism analyst said he had been told about the threat by a senior European terror official.
In a chilling warning analyst Paul Cruickshank said the insider told him “there’s intelligence that has been obtained by European security agencies that ISIS in Syria and Iraq is aiming to hit the United Kingdom next”.
He said: “The intelligence suggesting that British ISIS operatives in Syria and Iraq have been tasked to return to the United Kingdom to launch an attack against the UK.
"These concerns have been compounded by that vote yesterday in the British House of Commons authorising British airstrikes for the first time against ISIS in Syria."
He added: "So real concern now about the threat to the United Kingdom.
ISIS militants are spreading 'flesh eating bug' across Syria as Islamic State becomes riddled with disease

Islamic extremists are spreading a flesh eating bug across war-torn Syria, according to health experts.
The bug is being spread as a result of ISIS militants slaughtering innocent people and dumping their bodies in the street.
Known as Leishmaniasis disease, there have been 500 reported cases in Syria over the last year.
Dilqash Isa, who works for the Kurdish Red Crescent, said: "As a result of abominable acts by ISIS that included the killing of innocent people and dumping their corpses in streets, this is the leading factor behind the rapid spread of Leishmaniasis disease."
The claims are being supported by a Syrian Kurdish fighter.
