Rihanna pushes for global education on Twitter
Rihanna has solicited responses from some of the world's top politicians after sharing her support for global education.
The Barbadian pop star earned the Harvard Humanitarian of the Year award in February (17) and her interest in improving the lives of others was loud and clear on Friday (23Jun17), when she took to Twitter to raise awareness for the Global Partnership for Education charity.
In the message the 29-year-old called attention to the 2017 G20 Hamburg summit, an event taking place in Germany on 7-8 July (17), where leaders from 20 countries with the largest economies are due to hold serious discussions about the world's most pressing international issues.
Manchester United close to signing £40m midfielder, move will be finalised this week
Manchester United may have dismissed reports about agreeing personal terms with Nemanja Matic ahead of a potential transfer, but it is looking increasingly likely that the deal would be completed. ESPN reports that the Serbian could be a Manchester United player by the end of this week. He could be the most expensive signing for United in the 2017 summer transfer window yet, but the record may be broken by the likes of Alvaro Morata – or even Cristiano Ronaldo – in the near future.
The 28-year-old has been at Chelsea – in his second spell – since 2014, and he has been one of the top defensive midfielders in the division. It is no surprise that he has been able to capture two Premier League titles in the last three years.
Buhari, Osinbajo and the political urchins
I support President Muhammadu Buhari but, unlike many people, not out of blind loyalty. I have my reservations against his presidency which I have chronicled again and again. One of which is that he engages less with Nigerians. I had hoped that he would have been like General S. Patton.
Wasn’t it during the FDR presidency that America was in the Great Depression? Could the press have covered up for FDR when the life expectancy of an American male of that era was put at 62 years? An era unlike now when people who had jobs would remain in employment until they were either too sick or too old to work because there was nothing like Social Security until FDR introduced it. Historians are kind to FDR because of the presidential leadership he asserted in a straitened economy not because the American economy was well under his direction. Under President FDR, Americans were deprived of personal holdings of gold by law, and forced to submit their gold to the state, to build the economy. This led to the establishment of the largest deposit of gold reserves at Fort Knox.
Only government can save Nigeria
The way the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan saved Nigeria from a predicted implosion in the wake of the announcement of the results of 2015 general elections, is the way the Buhari-Osinbajo administration should save Nigeria now from threats of imminent disintegration. There is no need pretending that all is well when, from all indications, the country is under threat.
The fact that Nigeria survived much turbulence in the past is no guarantee that it will always survive. Things have changed. The Nigeria of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s is not the Nigeria of today. There is much enlightenment and information flow now is a matter of pressing button.
Jonathan did not hold unto the stereotyped belief that no incumbent president in Nigeria had lost election. Nothing is absolute. If Jonathan held arrogantly to that false belief as he was being prompted to, perhaps, by now, we would be talking a different story.

Arsenal closing in on Riyad Mahrez transfer after Leicester City star gives up on Barcelona
Arsenal are on the verge of beating Barcelona, Chelsea and Liverpool to the signing of Riyad Mahrez, according to reports.
The Algerian winger has flourished since joining Leicester City in 2014, helping the Foxes clinch the Premier League title in 2016.
Mahrez was named the PFA Player of the Year following the remarkable season but was unable to replicate the feat during the most recent campaign.
As Leicester struggled in their title defence, initially emerging as shock relegation contenders, Mahrez failed to find his best form before improving towards the end of the season.
Did Police Find a Baby Alive, 12 Days After a London Tower Block Fire?
On 26 June 2017, the Metro-UK web site published a fake story claiming that police had found a baby alive in the Grenfell Tower apartment building in London, 12 days after a devastating fire that killed at least 79 people.
A baby has miraculously survived twelve days after a horrific blaze at the Grenfell Tower in London left 79 people dead. The baby’s voice was heard when Detectives visited the scene for an ongoing investigation.
The article goes on to quote Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack as saying “The baby was crying when we rushed in. It was on the 16th floor.”
Jewish groups criticize Supreme Court decision to allow parts of Trump’s travel ban
On Monday, the court said it would hear the appeals of two cases that had resulted from the travel ban, which aimed to keep the citizens from six predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States for 90 days and all refugees for 120 days.
The high court agreed to stay parts of rulings that had blocked the ban from being enforced. The partial stay means that foreigners with no US ties could be prohibited from entering the country, but those with ties such as through business or personal relationship would remain unaffected, The New York Times reported. Those who had been to the country previously also could enter.
HIAS — formerly known as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society — is among the plaintiffs suing Trump in one of the cases the Supreme Court agreed to take on. It called the announcement “mixed news” in a statement, praising it for limiting some of the executive order’s reach but criticizing the court for partially allowing the executive order to be enforced.
