Liverpool Eye 28-goal Striker

Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca as an alternative option to Christian Benteke, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds have sent staff over to Chile this month to take a look at the striker at the Copa América.

Bacca is believed to set any potential buyer back £20 million this summer if the Echo is correct. That sum would be a good deal in today’s market with few top strikers available this summer.

The Colombian netted 20 La Liga goals last season and a further seven in the UEFA Europa League, including a brace in the final to help Sevilla win the UEFA Europa League for a second consecutive year. Bacca also scored once in the Copa del Rey.

Carlos Bacca has been in Europe for three-and-a-half years and has excelled, first with Club Bruges for a season and a half where he scored 28 goals in 35 Belgian Pro League appearances.

Following his €7 million (£5m) move to Spain in 2013, he has gone on to score 34 goals in 71 La Liga appearances.

Brendan Rodgers is believed to be keen to add a new striker to his side this summer after Liverpool’s 52 goals during the 2014-15 Premier League season were fewer than any other side in the top seven.

Daniel Sturridge is not due to return from injury until September and the England international has become a liability in regards to fitness having missed most of this past season sidelined.

Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini all proved to be flops last season and the Northern Irish manager may be looking to move them on as he makes space for a new striker.

The Reds have been strongly linked with Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke this summer, but see Bacca and Zenit St. Petersburg’s Salomón Rondón as alternatives if they do not land the Belgian.
