Oracle has appointed former HP vice president David Donatelli to lead its converged infrastructure business and drive the company's response to customer demand for hybrid cloud products.
Donatelli will assume the role of executive vice president of the division, which will see him looking after Oracle's engineered systems, server, storage, networking and tape products. He will report directly to chief executive Mark Hurd.
Hurd said that Donatelli joins Oracle at a pivotal time, claiming that the company is the only major hardware firm in the technology industry to be experiencing growth.
"I can think of no-one more qualified to continue to accelerate our growth, differentiate our offerings, and further cement the leadership of Oracle's global hardware business," he said.
Donatelli added that joining Oracle was an easy decision, and he wasted no time nailing his colours to the company's mast.
"In an industry where our hardware competitors are in chaos, Oracle stands alone with our strategy to engineer all layers of the software and hardware stack to work together seamlessly whether on-premise or in the Oracle Cloud," he said. "No-one else in the industry can do this and I'm excited to be a part of it."
Prior to joining Oracle, Donatelli was executive vice president and general manager of HP's Enterprise Group, a division that will become a separate company in November when HP splits into two to concentrate on hardware and software in isolation.
Donatelli was removed from his position in 2013, and reassigned to focus on assessing startups for potential investment.
It could be argued that this move by HP pushed Donatelli into Oracle's corporate arms. However, it is also worth noting that Hurd was once the chief executive of HP and has a deeper insight into the expertise Donatelli can bring to Oracle.
No doubt Oracle will be keen to tap into Donatelli's experience working for another major player in the technology industry, which has also been closely pursuing the hybrid cloud market.
Before HP, Donatelli spent over two decades at EMC, reaching the position of president of the company's storage division.
Donatelli's appointment at Oracle reinforces the firm's focus on cloud computing despite suffering declining revenues.
